Importance of Sustainable Skincare

Global warming is the crisis of our times, call it due to modernism or materialism, or ignorance. Scientists implore the public to move towards sustainability, and even governments of nations have signed pacts to effectuate their stance against the climate crisis.

Informed as we are, in this day and age of technology, of the hazards of pollution, it becomes imperative to take steps towards an eco-friendly skincare routine that helps our skin glow as well as the planet’s. After all, it couldn’t hurt to try something that would help you get seamless skin, all while being kinder to the planet.

The philosophy behind the skin care movement goes by the name ‘Sustainable skincare’. It is said to be the future of the skincare industry. If it is befuddling, worry not, for we’re here to spell it out for you.

Be it in choice of formulation ingredients, process of production, recyclability of the product or its packaging and distribution, the idea is that the product should align itself in some way to the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. Only then can these beauty products or brands be labelled as sustainable.

How can I choose Sustainable skincare products?

Sustainability is a tricky parameter that both established and newly developing eco-friendly brands attempt to maneuver. It is rather difficult to find a perfect product at present, but when evaluated on the basis of maximum to minimum harm caused to the environment, there are brands that do attempt to reach the benchmark.

The question, now, is how to find the right one for you. Deceptive marketing and packaging, and tall claims about the magical effects of certain products can all be quite overwhelming, so let's get cracking.

The choice of ingredients is the first step!!

The first question that may pop up in anyone’s mind when we read “eco-friendly” on the label is “what is it made of?”.

Well, surely the answer to the question doesn’t lie in the elaborate decorations on the packaging of your favorite product.

A truly natural product would be made of ingredients that undergo minimal processing, denaturation or chemical alteration. The lesser the ingredients are processed, the better.

Vegan, cruelty-free, and plant-based ingredients are a good place to start with. We follow these principles while formulating our products, to give the best to your skin that is best for the planet too!

But sustainable ingredients don’t just depend on that. It also depends on how the ingredients were sourced, grown and harvested. All of these have a cumulative effect on the overall naturality of the product and whether or not it is sustainable.

This is our brand promise…”Sustainable products, that are safe and effective for your skin and our planet.”

Next comes sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging is as important as the sustainable product itself. Taking a quick look at your cosmetic rack in new light can make you gasp, as you realise the amount of plastic that goes into packaging your favorite skin care products.

A report states that 7.9 billion units of rigid plastic was produced by the personal care industry in 2018. The numbers have, as you may have guessed, only risen since then.

Avoiding plastic in favor of glass (as our products) and metal would be the ideal strategy. Although, recyclable alternatives of plastic like PET (polyethylene), PETE (polyethylene terephthalate), and HDPE (high-density polyethylene) are still better to use than the plastic itself.

We need to make a difference, at each and every step, e.g by offering to take in your clean and empty bottles for recycling in exchange for a small discount. We as a team are getting there, though at a slow pace.

You can also unleash your creative side by opting to refashion an old lotion box to store knick-knacks or an empty skin serum bottle to hold a herbal oil. Reducing waste and reusing it has more profound effect on the environment than recycling. That brings us to our next point-

Opting for multipurpose products

When we can’t completely eliminate our needs, why not kill two birds with one stone? Using a single product that serves two or more purposes is a sure to be easier on our pocket as well as reduce the amount of packaging waste generated.

Recompense Planet Earth

As Mahatma Gandhi is attributed to have once said, “Be the change you want to see in this world.”

These words hold true for those wanting to truly transform their skin-care routine to more eco-friendly alternatives with an eye on Planet Earth’s welfare.

Every initiative they take towards sustainability is another step towards a healthier planet.

When you, a customer, choose to buy from such a brand, you indirectly convey that you choose the wellness of not just your skin, but the Earth and all of its inhabitants.

In conclusion, building a sustainable skincare routine doesn’t have to be stressful. You may not get it all correct at first, and overhauling your beauty routine at first may be a bit difficult. But the effort is worth it, as you have the opportunity to make a difference in the world all while looking and feeling good!
